The Mackay Homeowner's June Checklist: Solar, Air Con & Electrical, Sort It Before Summer Hits

Every year it's the same story in Mackay. The dry season rolls around, people think "yeah I'll sort that before summer," and then suddenly it's October, the temperature has gone mental, and every tradie in the region is booked solid for six weeks.

Don't be that person. June is the move. We've put together this no-fluff checklist to help Mackay homeowners figure out what needs sorting before the heat returns.

“October panic-booking your air con install is a North Queensland tradition. A bad one. Book in June. You’re welcome.”

Solar checklist, is your system working properly?

Whether you're thinking about going solar, or you've already got panels on the roof, here's what to check:

 Thinking about getting solar:

  • Power bills over $200 a month, regularly

  • North or west-facing roof with decent unshaded space

  • Roof in reasonable condition, no major damage or age issues

  • Running appliances heavily during the day (pool, AC, etc.)

  • Interested in adding a battery to store power for night-time

 Already have solar:

  • System is 8+ years old and hasn't been inspected

  • Output seems lower than it used to be

  • Inverter showing error codes or warnings

  • Not sure if your system is actually performing properly

Air con checklist: service, replace, or upgrade?

Your air con copped a hiding last summer. Here's how to tell if it's still up to the job:

  • Unit is 8–10+ years old

  • Struggles to reach the set temperature

  • Making unusual noises, rattling, grinding, squealing

  • Power bills crept up despite similar usage

  • Takes ages to cool the room when you first turn it on

1–2 ticks: probably just needs a service and clean.

3+ ticks: might be time to replace it. A modern energy-efficient unit will cool better and use way less power than an old one on its last legs.

Pro tip: pair a new unit with solar and you're basically running it for free during the day. We do both installs, same team.

Electrical safety checklist: don't skip these

  • Switchboard still uses old ceramic fuses (not circuit breakers)

  • Not sure if safety switches are installed

  • Lights flickering or circuits tripping without obvious cause

  • Outdoor powerpoints without weatherproof covers

  • Burning smell or discolouration near switches or outlets

  • Home hasn't had an electrical inspection in 10+ years

Even one tick on this list is worth a call. Electrical faults are one of the main causes of house fires in Queensland, and a safety check is a small job compared to the alternative.
